Ichetucknee Springs – Fort White – Aug 2009

Florida has some of the best natural springs and rivers you can see in the US. The 6 mile long Ichetucknee River and Park is a National Natural Landmark. And once you see the area, its not hard to see why.  The crystal clear water is gorgeous and the deep Blue Hole is bright teal blue! You can scuba dive the Blue Hole if you are certified. But everyone comes for one thing, to have a blast tubing down the river. Be sure to bring your own tube!! Tubes CAN be rented from private vendors outside the park, but you pay outrageously for them. You cannot bring any food or drink down the river, so be sure to hide away flask! In addition to tubing, Ichetucknee boasts beautiful areas to snorkel, canoe, swim, hike, and see wildlife. A full-service concession offers food, refreshments, and outdoor products at the heart of the park. There are lots of places to picnic and grill out before or after your 4 hour ride down the river.

The river is divided into 2 parts, you have to arrive early (around 8-9am) to do the beginning of the river as they limit the number of people who can do it and close it down earlier than the 2nd part. The 2nd part of the river is cloudier and more packed with people, but the 1st part is truly breath-taking. Oh and one more tip- the water is freezing! Bring lots of towels and leave them in your car so they are hot when you get out. It’s so cozy!
